The Development of USB Memory Cards
Computers and Hardware February 16th, 2008When it comes to saving audio, video, or data files from a number of electronic devices, people reach for memory cards. What makes this story of development so intriguing is that a number of companies all stake claim to having been the one to invent the USB memory drive. What we do know is that a company by the name of Trek first sold the USB memory stick in 2000. Even though Trek put its name out to the market first, actually a company called M-Systems started developing this device in 1998. Even so, a document from 1999 in which USB memory cards were described belongs to none other than IBM, actually becoming the first company to sell in North America during 2000.
With everyone trying to lay claim to this wonderful new piece of technology, it was still not patented for further development specific to laptops and mobile phones until late 2000 by KeyNetica under the parent company of Shmueli. However, the original company, Trek did patent a type of memory card under the name of ThumbDrive although in international markets. Sure, there are several disagreements between several companies as to who did what. Even so, the one thing everyone can agree on is that saving files has changed and definitely for the better. Over the years, this single device has evolved into a masterpiece of technology. Fast, loaded with saving capacity, and convenient is what the new wave of micro-sd, micro m2, and SDHC memory cards is all about with more exciting changes coming in the near future.
